SPECK #4: Neglect Comics

A 4-page comic talking about the Neglect Comic Wiki that I drew for SPECK #4, published on the 7th of December 2023.

SPECK #4 is available for purchase HERE.

Sometime in October 2023 I started to get frustrated. I had been struggling with the process of writing and drawing Mixtumq #2 and Transience #2, lamenting how long it was taking me to make progress on my two comic series. I absent-mindedly wondered to myself how long it had taken Ant Sang to release 8 issues of the Dharma Punks. So, I googled it. 2001-2003. Awesome! Okay, so I’m already running late. But then I wanted to know how many months there were between each issue. Nothing. Okay well that’s fine, I can just do the maths myself: What month did each issue come out? Nothing. What year? Nothing. On the 27th of October 2023, at my desk in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, I created Neglect Comics, the collaborative wiki of independent comics in Aotearoa.

Then Tashi Rd and I went to Ōtepoti Dunedin for Ōtepoti Zinefest 2023 and met Spencer Hall. Sometime past midnight on the 6th of November 2023, at the living room table of SJD’s house in Ōtepoti Dunedin, I made an email address and an Instagram account. The Instagram was immediately banned as being “spam”, which I disputed – and it was reinstated. The next day I apparently followed too many New Zealand independent comic artists, publishers, publications, and organisations because the Instagram was banned again. Which I disputed – and it was reinstated. On the 7th of November 2023, while Tashi Rd and I were driving back home from Auckland Airport, Spencer Hall called and offered me the URL “nzcomics.com” for the wiki.

On the 13th of November 2023, back at my desk in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, I finished this comic, which I sent to Liam Hansen to be published in SPECK #4. On the 17th of November 2023, I bussed into town to talk to Frances and Liam on 95bFM about the wiki. On the 7th of December, SPECK #4 came out.
